In January and February, temperatures can drop and stay below the freezing point in Germany, making these two months the coldest in the year. This is also the time when many of the landscapes appear achingly beautiful and exude an almost magical atmosphere. At this special time, many Germans love to take long afternoon walks through woods, fields and meadows, the sight of which is soothing and comforting. Here, branches, twigs and grasses are covered with frost and glisten like crystal in the diffused light of the winter sun, making for a grand and majestic spectacle. Shortly before the sun goes down, people return, leaving the harsh cold behind to enjoy the cosy warmth of their homes among their families and friends.
